Our first apple pie baking contest was a success and well attended.
Judging started at 3:30 pm and the supporters visited the vendors booths and could hardly wait for the judging to end.

It was a daunting task for the judges!
17 entries in the 2011 pie contest, at Friday’s Farmer’s Market, in Beausejour, made it challenging to choose a winner. Pies were judged based on three categories – appearance/presentation, flavour and texture.
No two pies looked alike… the judges saw pies with free hand patterns to those with braided edges, intricate lattice work, and one that included a customized orchard look! (The entrant had taken pastry and created an artistic picture which was of an apple tree with a basket below).
Flavours of the base varied from the traditional lard with a hint of salt to a crumble crust, delicately sweetened. The combination of flavours of the fillings ranged from cinnamon to molasses to one that included a slight hint of ginger.
Following the contest, supporters of the Market were able to sample a piece of their choosing. $157.53 was raised and will be donated to the Beausejour Food Bank.
Thanks to all of the entrants for their enthusiasm and hope to see you next year.
Again thank you all for your effort in making this event a great one. For those who wish the recipe, please go to the “RECIPE” page.
Dont’ forget, the market season is coming to an end with only one market day left on September 9 from 3-7pm, 1 km east from Junction Hwy 12 and Hwy 44 at Green Oak Gardens Greenhouse. We thank all of our patrons who dropped in at the market this year, supporting our local farms, bakers and crafters as every dollar spend at the market stayer closer to home.
